Galerie Ceysson & Bénétière presenta ad Art Basel Hong Kong 2025 dal 26 al 30 marzo un dialogo unico tra due figure di spicco della scena artistica newyorkese degli anni Settanta e Ottanta: Nancy Graves (1939–1995) e Frank Stella (1936–2024). Con sede nel cuore di SoHo, Graves e Stella frequentavano lo stesso vivace ambiente artistico, insieme a figure come Richard Serra, Chuck Close e Brice Marden. Pur non collaborando direttamente, i loro percorsi incrociati testimoniano lo stesso spirito di innovazione e il comune interesse nella sperimentazione di forme e tecniche.
NANCY GRAVES
Nancy Graves esplora le intersezioni tra arte, scienza e storia. Esprime un fascino per le reliquie del passato, che lei descrive come “frammenti d’arte”. Il suo lavoro attinge a una varietà di fonti, dai disegni preistorici alle immagini satellitari, che integra in composizioni complesse dove astrazione e figurazione coesistono. La sua pratica di “citazione visiva” combina documenti scientifici raccolti (immagini cartografiche, registrazioni di dati spaziali, fotografie di arte rupestre). Verrà presentato Paramatta di Nancy Graves, appartenente all’affascinante Serie Australia, che l’artista ha sviluppato dopo la sua visita nel Paese nel marzo 1985. Si distingue per l’uso di colori brillanti e saturi, in contrasto con sfondi neri, e per l’integrazione di elementi scultorei in fusione di alluminio, che aggiungono profondità e complessità visiva attraverso le loro ombre proiettate. Come le altre opere della serie, Paramatta si ispira a luoghi noti per essere stati l’habitat delle tribù originarie. L’opera sovrappone motivi colorati ispirati alla flora locale, ma anche disegni preistorici di Ayer’s Rock ed elementi di linguaggio pittografico o di scrittura protoletteraria.
FRANK STELLA
Parallelamente alle opere di Nancy Graves, le creazioni di Frank Stella ci immergono in un periodo cruciale per l’artista, quello degli anni ’80. All’inizio di questo decennio, ha prodotto due serie importanti: The Waves e Illustrations after El Lissitzky’s Had Gadya. Variazioni uniche su multipli, le CTP (prove colore) rappresentano un momento chiave nel processo creativo di Stella. L’artista interviene direttamente sulle acqueforti, aggiungendo pittura, collage e materiali sovrapposti. Questo processo rende ogni CTP un’opera unica, sfumando i confini tra pratiche grafiche e pittoriche. Nella serie The Waves, Stella trae ispirazione dal romanzo Moby Dick di Herman Melville. Questo testo monumentale fornisce all’artista una ricca base narrativa da cui costruire composizioni complesse e astratte. Stella si avvale di un canovaccio vario ma preciso, da cui prende spunto per le sue libere associazioni, fondendo astrazione ed evocazione letteraria. Come Nancy Graves, Frank Stella esplora il potere narrativo delle forme astratte in The Waves. Le opere di questa serie illustrano un approccio ibrido e innovativo, aprendo la strada al periodo più “barocco” dell’artista.

Galerie Ceysson & Bénétière presents at Art Basel Hong Kong 2025 from 26 to 30 March a unique dialogue between two major figures of the New York art scene of the 1970s and 1980s: Nancy Graves (1939–1995) and Frank Stella (1936–2024). Based in the heart of SoHo, Graves and Stella frequented the same vibrant artistic milieu, alongside figures such as Richard Serra, Chuck Close and Brice Marden. Although they didn’t collaborate directly, their crossed paths testify to the same spirit of innovation and shared interest in experimenting with forms and techniques.
NANCY GRAVES
Nancy Graves explores the intersections between art, science and history. She expresses a fascination for relics of the past, which she describes as “shards of art”. Her work draws on a variety of sources, from prehistoric drawings to satellite images, which she integrates into complex compositions where abstraction and figuration coexist. Her practice of “visual citation” combines collected scientific documents (cartographic images, spatial data records, rock art photographs). Paramatta by Nancy Graves will be presented, belonging to the fascinating Australia Series, which the artist developed after her visit to the country in March 1985. It is distinguished by its use of bright, saturated colors, contrasted with black backgrounds, and by the integration of sculptural elements in cast aluminum, which add depth and visual complexity through their projected shadows. Like the other works in the series, Paramatta draws on places known to have been the habitat of original tribes. The work superimposes colorful motifs inspired by local flora, but also prehistoric drawings from Ayer’s Rock and elements of pictographic language or proto-literary writing.
FRANK STELLA
In parallel with Nancy Graves’ works, Frank Stella’s creations plunge us into a pivotal period for the artist, that of the 1980s. At the beginning of this decade, he produced two major series: The Waves and Illustrations after El Lissitzky’s Had Gadya. Unique variations on multiples, the CTPs (color trial proofs) represent a key moment in Stella’s creative process. The artist intervenes directly on the etchings, adding paint, collage and superimposed materials. This process makes each CTP a unique work, blurring the boundaries between graphic and pictorial practices. In The Waves series, Stella takes her inspiration from Herman Melville’s novel Moby Dick. This monumental text provides the artist with a rich narrative base from which to build complex, abstract compositions. Stella seizes upon a varied but precise canvas, which he uses as a starting point for his free associations, blending abstraction and literary evocation. Like Nancy Graves, Frank Stella explores the narrative power of abstract forms in The Waves. The works in this series illustrate a hybrid and innovative approach, paving the way for the artist’s more “baroque” period.
