ENERGIA, ora legale.

Daylight saving time returns on Sunday: the next 7 months to see benefits for the Italian electricity system. Since 2004, more than € 1.6 billion and 9.6 billion kWh of electricity have been saved

Rome, 27 March 2020 – Daylight saving time returns on Sunday 29 March. As a result of setting our clocks ahead one hour, the electricity system in Italy will benefit over the next 7 months.

Benefits which in 2019 – as reported by Terna – the company that manages the national electricity grid – resulted in a savings of 505 million kWh (equal to the annual electricity consumption of approximately 190 thousand households), a value corresponding to lower CO2 emissions of 250 thousand tonnes and an economic savings of approximately €100 million.

However, the benefit in 2020 may be influenced by the reduction in consumption recorded in this period of business closures due to the health emergency caused by Covid-19.

Overall, between 2004 and 2019, the drop in electricity consumption in Italy as a result of daylight saving time has amounted to roughly 9.6 billion kWh – a volume equivalent to the annual electricity needs of a region like Sardinia – and has led, in economic terms, to savings for citizens of over € 1,650 billion.

During the spring-summer period, April and October are the months with the highest energy savings.

Moving the hands of the clock ahead by one hour postpones the use of artificial light while business activities are still in progress.

During the summer months the “delayed” effect in turning on the lights occurs in the evening, when most business activities have ended, recording less significant values in terms electricity savings.

On the home page of Terna’s website, www.terna.it, the “load curve” is displayed, that allows electricity consumption in Italy to be tracked in real time.
