Roma, 12 maggio 2025 – Terna (società che gestisce la rete elettrica di trasmissione nazionale) e IPTO (Transmission System Operator – TSO) greco, hanno formalizzato a Roma in occasione del vertice intergovernativo tra Italia e Grecia, il Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) che regolerà i principali termini e condizioni per la progettazione e realizzazione della nuova interconnessione elettrica tra i due paesi.
ELETTRODOTTO TRA ITALIA E GRECIA
L’elettrodotto in corrente continua tra Italia e Grecia sarà una delle infrastrutture di rete che, in sinergia con quelle esistenti e con gli interventi di sviluppo futuri, contribuirà al raggiungimento degli obiettivi di decarbonizzazione e al rafforzamento del ruolo dei due paesi quali hub elettrici del Mediterraneo. «Il nuovo collegamento elettrico sottomarino tra l’Italia e la Grecia aumenterà la sicurezza dell’intera zona Sud del Paese e favorirà approvvigionamenti efficienti di energia, grazie alla possibilità di abilitare nuove risorse e di mantenere lo scambio tra i due Stati. L’interconnessione, che affiancherà l’esistente, in esercizio dal 2002, garantirà maggiore efficienza al servizio di trasmissione di energia – ha dichiarato al riguardo Giuseppina Di Foggia, amministratore delegato e direttore generale di Terna -, siamo convinti che un sistema elettrico europeo interconnesso sia la chiave per una rete affidabile e sostenibile».

IMPORTANZA DELL’INTERCONNESSIONE
Concorde Manos Manousakis, presidente e amministratore delegato di IPTO, che ha aggiunto: «L’interconnessione elettrica svolge un ruolo cruciale nel raggiungimento degli obiettivi climatici dell’Unione Europea e nella transizione verso un sistema energetico pulito. Il nuovo corridoio energetico tra Grecia e Italia non solo incrementerà la capacità di scambio elettrico, ma contribuirà anche a rafforzare la sicurezza energetica e a migliorare l’efficienza del mercato elettrico europeo integrato, generando benefici tangibili per i consumatori di entrambi i Paesi. IPTO e Terna, grazie alla consolidata collaborazione e alla profonda competenza tecnica maturata nel settore, sono pienamente in grado di portare a termine con successo questo progetto infrastrutturale strategico».
L’INFRASTRUTTURA IN CIFRE
L’infrastruttura, con potenza fino a 1.000 MW e avente lunghezza complessiva di circa 300 chilometri, dei quali 240 in cavo sottomarino con una profondità massima di circa 1.000 metri, affiancherà l’esistente collegamento da 500 MW in esercizio dal 2002. Per l’opera, Terna e IPTO prevedono un investimento complessivo di circa 1,9 miliardi di euro. Per quanto concerne il lato italiano, il cavo sottomarino approderà nel Comune di Melendugno e la nuova stazione di conversione sarà realizzata nel Comune di Galatina, entrambi in provincia di Lecce.
GOVERNANCE DI PROGETTO CONGIUNTA
Il Memorandum of Understanding siglato ieri, che avrà una validità triennale, prevede una governance di progetto congiunta che definirà la strategia generale e il coordinamento delle attività. In aggiunta, Terna e IPTO sottoscriveranno successivi accordi volti a regolare la gestione coordinata delle fasi di gara per l’approvvigionamento di cavi e stazioni di conversione, nonché la successiva realizzazione dell’infrastruttura. Il GRITA 2, già presente nel Piano di sviluppo europeo dei TSO (Ten-Year Network Development Plan 2024), è stato congiuntamente candidato alla seconda lista Project of Common Interest/ Project of Mutual Interest.

TERNA AND IPTO SIGN MEMORANDUM OF UNDERSTANDING FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF GRITA 2, THE NEW ELECTRICAL INTERCONNECTION BETWEEN ITALY AND GREECE – Rome, 12 May 2025. The new submarine power link will operate alongside the existing interconnection, in service since 2002. The project will enhance the integration of the two countries’ electricity markets and diversify supply sources, reinforcing the role of Italy and Greece as electricity hubs in the Mediterranean region. Terna, the Italian national grid operator, and IPTO, the Greek Transmission System Operator (TSO), today signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in Rome as part of the Italy-Greece Intergovernmental Summit. The MoU outlines the main terms and conditions for the design and development of a new electrical interconnection between the two countries.
The new high-voltage direct current (HVDC) link between Italy and Greece will become a key infrastructure project supporting existing assets and future network developments. It will contribute to the achievement of decarbonization targets and strengthen the position of Italy and Greece as electricity hubs in the Mediterranean. «The new submarine power link between Italy and Greece will enhance energy security in southern Italy and facilitate efficient energy procurement by enabling new resources and maintaining energy exchange between the two countries. The infrastructure will have a transmission capacity of up to 1,000 MW and span approximately 300 km in total, including around 240 km of subsea cable installed at depths of up to 1,000 meters. It will complement the existing 500 MW link that has been operational since 2002. Terna and IPTO expect to invest approximately €1.9 billion in the project. On the Italian side, the subsea cable will make landfall in the municipality of Melendugno, while the new converter station will be constructed in the municipality of Galatina, both located in the province of Lecce. The three-year MoU establishes a joint project governance structure to define the overarching strategy and coordinate activities. Terna and IPTO will also enter into subsequent agreements governing the joint management of tendering processes for cable and converter station procurement, as well as the implementation of the infrastructure. The GRITA 2 project is already included in the European TSOs’ Ten-Year Network Development Plan 2024 and has been jointly proposed for inclusion in the second list of Projects of Common Interest / Projects of Mutual Interest.
